About the Axolotl

What is an Axolotl?

Axolotl is a species of salamander with a very unique genetic makeup. Due to a rare condition called ‘neoteny’, they retain most of their larval features into adulthood, so they have all the features of a tadpole – from feathery gills to a long, quill-like dorsal fin – even when they’re fully mature.

Axolotls are carnivores, surviving on a diet of worms, insects, crustaceans, molluscs and some small species of fish. Until recent decades, they were at the top of the food chain within their distribution habitat, but today invasive species of perch and tilapia pose a threat and have contributed to a decline in their numbers.

Commonly mistaken for fish, axolotls are unique among the amphibian family in that they spend their entire lives in water. Indeed, axolotls are sometimes known as Mexican walking fish, on account of their appearance and adopted habitat.

How do Axolotls Differ from Other Salamander Species?

Two Axolotls

Although axolotls are salamanders ther are many ways to tell them apart.

  • Axolotls can grow bigger then most salamanders
  • You can only find Axolotls in Mexico and Japan unlike salamanders for they can be found in many places
  • Because of a rare condition that Axolotls have called Neoteny they can stay young "forever"
  • Axolotls can only live underwater and not on land like most salamanders
  • Can you have a pet Axolotl?

Yes! You are able to adopt an Axolotl but only in some states. For example, adopting an Axolotl is illegal in California, Maine, New Jersey, and D.C. While in other states you need a permit to own an Axolotl, like in New Mexico and Hawaii. This can be illegal because the Axolotl population is down to 700 to 1,200. Yes, sadly the Axolotl is endangered. Another fact about Axolotls is that peolpe have been eating Axolotls, mostly in Japan. There is a resturant in Japan that serves deep fried Axolotl. This could explain why an Axolotl has been found in Japan in the first place. It was posibly brought to be deep fried and eaten.
